Instant Pot Jasmine Rice Recipe

This Instant Pot Jasmine Rice recipe really takes all the guess-work out of making rice in the Instant Pot! With so many options and buttons sometimes the Instant Pot can feel daunting and overwhelming. You may feel confused about the Instant Pot rice setting and not know how to get started. This recipe makes it super easy as you will cook your rice on high pressure as detailed below.

This recipe is simply the best! Perfectly cooking rice in the Instant Pot and allowing you to set it and walk away! No more boiling over on the stove top – thank goodness!

What is Jasmine Rice best served with?

Gluten Free Stir Fry with meat and veggies in a white bowl.

If you’ve been around here for awhile it’s not new information that I LOVE rice! In fact some of my favorite comfort foods are layered on top of rice. Pictured above is a Gluten Free Stir Fry (that we make at least once a week), Instant Pot Butter Chicken (which I’m convinced I could literally eat every day of my life), Instant Pot Teriyaki Chicken and my favorite Healthy Sweet and Sour Chicken (also made in the Instant Pot – yep, I’m also my Instant Pot’s biggest fan). So it only made sense that I started talking about my favorite way to make Instant Pot Rice!

What You Need:

  • Instant Pot
  • Jasmine White Rice
  • Water
  • Fine Mesh Strainer

How to make Instant Pot Jasmine Rice 2 cups:

To make two cups of jasmine rice in the Instant Pot begin by rinsing your rice using a fine-mesh strainer and rinsing the rice under cold running water until the water runs clear.

Once rinsed, add the rice and water to the Instant Pot. Cover and lock the lid. Select pressure cook on high pressure or manual for 4 minutes, with the “keep warm” button selected.

After the cooking time has finished, allow the Instant Pot to naturally depressurize for 10 minutes.

*Pro Tip: Once you hear the Instant Pot beep after the 4 minute cooking time has elapsed, set yourself a 10 minute timer so you don’t end up forgetting about your rice!

Once the 10 minute natural release is complete, quick release any remaining pressure by carefully moving the steam valve to “venting”. After the steam has fully released and the pressure pin has dropped, carefully open the lid by tilting it away from you. Use a fork, fluff the rice and serve. It’s that easy!

If you are looking to make less rice in the Instant Pot you can cook 1 cup of Jasmine rice with 1 cup of water the same way for 3 minutes on high pressure or manual with a 10 minute natural release.

Looking to make more rice? You can make 3 cups of Jasmine rice with 3 cups of water following the same recipe instructions listed below for a 5 minute cook time on high pressure or manual with a 10 minute natural release.

*This recipe works in both 6 and 8 quart Instant Pots.

Do you have to rinse jasmine rice?

The short answer is yes. You want to rinse but not soak the rice before cooking in your Instant Pot or pressure cooker. This step is important to rinse out the excess starch which if left will cause clumpy rice that sticks together and is a bit gummy in texture.

Instant Pot Jasmine Rice FAQs:

  • How long do you cook jasmine rice in the pressure cooker?
The cooking time for this recipe depends on the amount of rice you are cooking:
-1 cup of rice is cooked for 3 minutes
-2 cups of rice is cooked for 4 minutes
-3 cups of rice is cooked for 5 minutes
And all quantities of rice receive a 10 minute natural release.
  • Do I need to use the rice setting to make Instant Pot Rice?
While you can, this recipe actually calls for you to use the high pressure (or manual) setting to make Jasmine Rice in the Instant Pot.
  • What is the ratio of rice to water for cooking rice in the Instant Pot?
Cooking rice in the Instant Pot uses a 1:1 ratio of water to rice. That means an equal amount of rice and water are used.
  • Do I need to use water to cook rice or can I use broth?
You can totally use broth if you’d prefer! Simply replace an equal amount of broth for the water called for.
  • Can I add salt or oil to my Instant Pot rice before cooking?
While not needed you can definitely add either salt and/or oil to your rice before cooking for an instant pot seasoned jasmine rice. For two cups of rice add in 1/2 teaspoon salt and 2 teaspoons your neutral flavored oil of choice.
