What you’ll need:

  • cream cheese
  • salted butter
  • vanilla extract
  • powdered sugar

  • hand mixer
  • frosting spatula
  • piping bag + tips

How to make Cream Cheese Frosting

This classic vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting recipe will become your go-to frosting recipe for all your favorite desserts!

To make this frosting recipe, start by adding the room temperature cream cheese and salted butter to a large mixing bowl. Whip the cream cheese and butter together with an electric hand mixer until the mixture is smooth and creamy. This will only take about one minute.

Add the vanilla extract and sift in the powdered sugar. On low-speed, mix until the frosting is fully combined and smooth. Be sure to scrap down the sides of the bowl while mixing to incorporate all the ingredients. Once the frosting is smooth, it’s ready to enjoy!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature (to make dairy-free use this cream cheese)
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, room temperature (to make dairy free use this butter)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the room temperature softened cream cheese and salted butter and whip with an electric hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the vanilla extract and sift in the powdered sugar, then on low-speed, mix until the frosting is fully combined and smooth. Scrap down the sides of the bowl while mixing so that all the ingredients are incorporated. The frosting is ready once it’s smooth.
  3. Use a frosting spatula or piping bag and tips to frost your favorite baked goods. Eat and enjoy!

Notes

  • Salted Butter: If you aren’t using salted butter, be sure to add 1/4 teaspoon salt to this recipe.
  • Frosting Quantity: This recipe will frost either one batch of 12 cinnamon rolls, one 2-layer 8″ or 9″ cake, one 9×13 sheet cake, or 12-18 cupcakes.
