Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs are so incredibly easy to peel and come out perfect every time. I’ve detailed 3 different ways to cook eggs in the Instant Pot: hard boiled, soft boiled and what I call jammy eggs with a still partly runny yolk. Cook as few eggs as you want or as many as a dozen.

Can You Make Hard Boiled Eggs in Instant Pot

The Instant Pot allows you to make as few or as many hard boiled eggs as you’d like in only a few minutes. You can arrange a few eggs on the cooking rack or stack multiple layers deep with no time adjustment needed. Hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot are incredibly easy to peel, especially so if you are using fresh eggs.

Using the Instant Pot makes it so easy to make Deviled Eggs quickly!

How To Make Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs

In this recipe I detail 3 different types of Instant Pot boiled eggs so you can choose your desired yolk doneness. Each method yields completely firm and set egg whites and each peels beautifully. Just set the timer to match your desired yolk consistency; whether hard boiled, soft boiled or jammy. The jammy yolk is not completely runny but instead about half the yolk is runny and the rest is a soft set.

Why Are My Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs Cracking

The integrity of the egg shell plays a big role in how they hold up in the Instant Pot however there are many things you can do to help prevent cracking. Allow your eggs to come to room temperature before cooking to help minimize cracking. Always use the trivet that came with your Instant Pot to stack the eggs on, this minimizes movement during the cooking process and further prevents cracking.

I’ve successfully hard boiled many batches of both store bought eggs and my own chickens’ eggs without cracking however I have one chicken who just lays a thin shell and I now know her eggs can’t be hard boiled without cracking.

Can You Make Soft Boiled Eggs in Instant Pot

My personal favorite are the jammy eggs, I absolutely love a runny yolk! I also love the hard boiled eggs for deviled eggs and the soft boil is a great balance for those who don’t want a runny yolk but also don’t like a dry yolk that comes from the typical hard boiled eggs. Regardless of which type is your favorite the pressure cooker makes the very best hard and soft boiled eggs every single time!

What Do I Need To Make Pressure Cooker Hard and Soft Boiled Eggs?

Hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot is incredibly easy and requires only minimal equipment. What you will need is:

  • Instant Pot
  • Trivet
  • 1 cup of water
  • Tongs – for transferring the hot eggs from the Instant Pot to the ice bath
  • Large mixing bowl – for the ice bath
  • Ice – I love these lidded ice cube trays!
  • You favorite salt (optional but recommended)
  • Air-tight Storage Containers – a must for meal prep and leftovers

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs 8 qt

I have an 8 quart Instant Pot and LOVE it! I highly recommend this size if you are feeding a lot of people, want the options to occasionally feed a lot of people (think holidays) or like to batch cook and freeze portions for later use.

Should Eggs Be Room Temperature or From The Fridge

This recipe will allow you to hard boil both cold eggs straight from the fridge as well as room temperature eggs. The only difference will be how long the Instant Pot takes to come to pressure. The Instant Pot will take slightly longer to come to pressure before the cooking count down begins with cold eggs.

How To Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

Peeling eggs with this method couldn’t be easier! Simply transfer the eggs from the Instant Pot to the ice water bath and allow them to sit in the ice water for one minute. Then remove one egg at a time and tap it on the counter to crack the shell and under cold water water in your sink peel the shell and membrane right off! Most of the shell will likely even come off in one piece.

Are Fresh Or Old Eggs Best For Hard Boiled Eggs?

Most people will tell you that old eggs will peel better for hard boiled eggs but the great thing about the Instant Pot is that it doesn’t matter! Both fresh and old eggs peel beautifully with ease. I keep backyard chickens and have even tested this recipe with eggs laid fresh that day and they peeled like a dream!

Storing Hard Boiled Eggs

You can store your hard boiled eggs with or without the shell on in the fridge however for ease of peeling I recommend peeling your eggs immediately following the ice bath. Once you’ve peeled your eggs store them in an air-tight container in your fridge for up to 5 days.

How Long Are Hard Boiled Eggs Good For?

  • Hard boiled eggs will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Hard boiled eggs are good at room temperature for up to 2 hours.
  • Hard boiled eggs do not freeze well. The egg whites will become rubbery and I do not recommend freezing them.
  • However, you can freeze the cooked egg yolks if you like by placing the cooked yolks into a freezer bag and removing the air. They will last in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs for Easter

If you are looking for a game changer when it comes to making a big batch of hard boiled eggs then the Instant Pot is definitely the way to go! Instant Pot hard boiled eggs for Easter or any holiday is definitely a time saver for coloring eggs or making a batch for deviled eggs. The Instant Pot benefit is that these hard boiled eggs peel like an absolute dream and you can also easily select your desired yolk doneness.

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs 5-5-5 Method

There are a lot of different ways to cook eggs in an Instant Pot. “Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs 5-5-5” is one method in which you cook the eggs on high pressure for 5 minutes then do a 5 minute natural release and finally a 5 minute ice water bath before peeling. I’ve also heard of a Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs 6-6-6 as well as an Instant Pot 7-7-7 which uses the same principal as the 5-5-5 but with increased time. This recipe however is different than all those and I highly recommend trying it! It allows you to get your eggs just the way you like them whether hard boiled, soft boiled or jammy with a still partly runny yolk.

Description

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs are so incredibly easy to peel and come out perfect every time. I’ve detailed 3 different ways to cook eggs in the Instant Pot: hard boiled, soft boiled and what I call jammy eggs with a still partly runny yolk. Cook as few eggs as you want or as many as a dozen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1–12 eggs
  • 1 cup of water
  • Ice (for ice bath)

Instructions

  1. Pour the water into the bottom of the Instant Pot. Then place the metal trivet into the bottom of the pot.
  2. Evenly space the eggs on the metal trivet.
  3. Place the lid on the Instant Pot, set the valve to sealing and select high pressure / manual for the desired time, 2-7 minutes (*2 minutes for jammy slightly runny yolks, *3-4 minutes for soft boiled yolks and *6-7 minutes for hard boiled yolks).
  4. Once the timer goes off quick release the pressure.
  5. While the steam releases, prepare your ice bath in a large boil with ice and cold water.
  6. Using tongs, transfer the eggs to the ice bath for 1 minute.
  7. Then remove the eggs one at a time and crack the shells on the counter and peel under cold running water.
  8. Leave the eggs whole or cut them in half to enjoy immediately with your favorite salt or store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes

*2 minutes: Jammy – Set whites and half runny yolks, half soft set yolks
*3-4 minutes: Soft – Firmer whites and soft boiled yolks
*6 -7 minutes: Hard – Firm whites and fully set hard boiled yolks

I don’t know if this is a silly question, but is the cook time the same for a 6 quart InstantPot?

Hi Ailie, not silly at all! Yes, the cook time should be the same between 6 and 8 quart Instant Pots.

How are your 6-7 minute eggs not green around the yolk? 4 minutes for jumbo eggs I get green.

Hi Dave! I wish I could tell you exactly but there are a lot of factors involved. I’m not sure how to explain my results since I’m not sure the quantity of sulphur and hydrogen compounds at play. It might be that I have low iron water which can effect cooking, not sure. I will say that I do occasionally get the green rim but usually only with store-bought eggs. Those pictured are from our own hens. I’ve also heard some hypothesis that chilling your eggs immediately after removing them and peeling right away to cool rapidly can help prevent the green but I’m not sure how true that is.
